If another flu crisis should arise, cancer patients and senior citizens can again count on On-Site Health to provide clinics which do not require those in poor health to wait in line.  By facilitating appointments, the sickest of our citizens were able to obtain vaccinations without the debilitating effects of having to wait in long lines or in outdoor areas.  While other companies were not able to obtain vaccine, On-Site Health administered vaccinations to those high risk patients that were at risk of death and/or serious disability should they have gotten the flu.

On-Site HEALTH’s PROPRIETARY PROGRAMS

By using our special, proprietary programs, employers have successfully worked with us to help increase employee participation.  Please ask about these services when you make an appointment.  We offer a special vaccination program, geared to the needs of school districts, which helps ensure the health of staff and faculty.  We also offer special services to senior citizens and the seriously ill.

Influenza

Influenza (“flu”) is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Influenza can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.  Getting a flu shot each year can prevent influenza.

Every year in the United States , on average between 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu.  More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications.  About 36,000 people die from flu.    Other illnesses can have the same symptoms and are often mistaken for influenza. But only an illness caused by the influenza virus is really influenza.

Any person who is at high risk of having serious influenza or serious complications from flu or any person who is in close contact with someone in a high-risk group should get vaccinated every year. Nearly one-third of people 50 to 64 years of age in the United States have one or more medical conditions that place them at increased risk for serious flu complications.

Influenza viruses are constantly changing.  Therefore, influenza vaccines are updated every year.  Getting a flu vaccination each fall is the best way to prevent this illness.  Influenza vaccine  will not prevent “influenza-like” illnesses caused by other viruses.

The "flu season" in the United States is usually from November through April each year. October or November is the best time to get vaccinated.   Getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be beneficial.

Inactivated influenza vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines, including pneumococcal vaccine.

Serious problems from influenza vaccine are very rare. The viruses in inactivated influenza vaccine have been killed, so you cannot get influenza from the inactivated influenza vaccine.

REMEMBER:  The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccination each fall.

Pneumonia

Pneumococcal disease is a serious disease that causes much sickness and death. Anyone can get it. In fact, pneumococcal disease kills more people in the United States each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined.

Pneumococcal disease can lead to serious infections of the lungs, the blood, and the covering of the brain. About 1 out of every 20 people who get pneumococcal pneumonia dies from it.   People with the special health risks are even more likely to die from the disease.

The pneumococcal vaccine is safe and it works. The pneumococcal vaccine protects against the 23 most common types of pneumococcal bacteria populations.  People who get the vaccine are protected against almost all of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases as well.

There are no living bacteria in the vaccine so you can’t get pneumonia from taking the vaccine.

Drugs such as penicillin were once effective in treating these infections; but the disease has become more resistant to these drugs, making treatment of pneumococcal infections more difficult. This makes prevention of the disease through vaccination even more important.

The pneumococcal vaccine is safe, it works, and one shot lasts most people up to 10 years. People who get the vaccine are protected against almost all of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases as well.

Tetanus and Diptheria

Tetanus disease is a disease of the nervous system caused by bacteria.  It is often fatal.  Bacteria usually enters the body through wounds or other breaks in the skin.  Early symptoms include lockjaw, stiffness in the neck and abdomen, and difficulty swallowing. Later symptoms include fever, elevated blood pressure, and severe muscle spasms.

Diphtheria is an acuter infectious disease characterized by weakness, high fever, and difficulty breathing.  It is passed when germs are spread by an infectious person into the nose and throats of others.

Death results in about 11% of cases.

Adults should receive a booster dose of Td every ten years. If someone experiences a deep or puncture wound, or a wound contaminated with dirt, an additional booster dose may be given.

TB Testing

Keeping TB Under Control

TB Skin Testing Provides a Needed Ounce of Prevention as the scourge of Tuberculosis continues to threaten a comeback.  Roughly 20,000 new cases of pulmonary Tuberculosis are discovered yearly in the United States.  That is one reason health care facilities and school districts are requiring yearly screening of employees for exposure.

The test is simple and virtually painless.  A positive reaction to the TB test indicates previous  exposure to the bacterium that causes TB.  A positive reaction does not mean that an individual has TB, only that he has been exposed.  An individual who tests positive may require 3-6 months of preventive antibiotic theraphy.

On-Site Health is pleased to offer convenient, low cost TB skin testing On-Site at your workplace.
